How do they test for panleukopenia in cats?
Feline panleukopenia requires a preliminary diagnosis based on clinical symptoms, such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration. Severe vomiting is the main feature of feline panleukopenia, and bloody diarrhea is seen in the later stage. A blood routine test and FPV test strips are required for diagnosis. When a cat is infected with the feline panleukopenia virus, a blood routine test can detect a decrease in the number of white blood cells in the cat’s blood, and the FPV test strips are positive if the test strips have two lines, which can confirm that the cat is infected with the feline panleukopenia virus.
How to detect feline panleukopenia with an antigen test kit?
First of all, cats with feline plague can be preliminarily examined through clinical symptoms. Usually, the incubation period of feline plague is 2 to 9 days. The clinical symptoms are related to age and virus virulence. Usually, young cats who have not been vaccinated against related infectious diseases are susceptible. The main clinical symptoms include sudden onset, mental depression, refusal to eat, vomiting, diarrhea, etc. The vomitus is mostly brown-yellow liquid, abdominal pain, and diarrhea is abnormally foul.
Secondly, when a cat shows the above clinical symptoms, it can be preliminarily diagnosed whether the cat has feline plague. For confirmation, a blood routine test and FPV test paper test are required. Usually, a large decrease in white blood cells can be observed in a blood routine test, so feline plague is also called feline panleukopenia. The FPV test paper test requires testing by taking the cat’s eye and nasal secretions and feces. If it has feline plague, the test paper test result is two lines.
Finally, when the cat becomes ill, subcutaneous injection of feline plague high immune serum-specific therapy should be given immediately. Then, anti-vomiting and anti-diarrhea, control of secondary infection, infusion, and other methods should be used for national treatment. The main method of prevention is vaccination. Cats should be vaccinated for the first time when they are 18 years old, vaccinated again at 12 weeks of age, and then boosted once a year after that.
