What is an Ehrlichia test?
-
Hematology Examination:
Blood analysis may show decreased white blood cell and platelet counts, along with an increased proportion of monocyte–macrophage cells. Liver function tests often reveal elevated transaminases. Typical morulae (mulberry-like inclusions) may be observed within lymphocytes, monocytes, or neutrophils. -
Serological Testing:
The indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) is commonly used to measure specific antibody titers in the patient’s serum. Because antibodies usually become detectable around the third week after infection, this method is more suitable for later-stage confirmation. -
Urinalysis:
Urine tests may reveal abnormalities such as proteinuria, hematuria, and the presence of urinary casts. -
PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction):
PCR amplification to detect Ehrlichia DNA is currently the most sensitive and effective method for early diagnosis. -
Pathogen Examination:
Detection of the pathogen through peripheral blood smears or pathogen isolation and culture can provide a definitive diagnosis.
How long do dogs test positive for Ehrlichia?
After a dog is infected with Ehrlich disease, the time to test Ehrlichia positive is 2-4 weeks.
What is the gold standard test for Ehrlichia?
The gold standard test for Ehrlichia utilizes colloidal gold–based assay reagents. The core mechanism behind a gold-labeled assay is fascinating: it relies on colloidal gold, which consists of nanoscale gold particles produced by the reduction of chloroauric acid. During testing, these gold particles are conjugated to specific antibodies or antigens. When an antigen–antibody reaction takes place, a visible red line appears, allowing the test results to be interpreted directly by eye.
Two Main Formats of Colloidal Gold Assays
Colloidal gold detection is generally classified into two formats based on the testing approach. The first is immunochromatography, such as the double-antigen sandwich chromatographic method commonly used in HIV rapid test strips. The second is the dot immunogold filtration assay, which is less commonly used in routine diagnostics.
