What tests are done for dengue?

Dengue fever tests include routine tests, virus isolation and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, etc.

  1. Routine examination: Decreased total white blood cell count, starting to decline on the second day of onset, and reaching the lowest point on the 4th to 5th day, which can be as low as 2×10^9/L, with classified neutropenia. 1/4-3/4 cases have thrombocytopenia. Some cases have proteinuria and erythrocyturia. About half of the cases have a mild elevation of endogenous transaminases. In brain-type cases, cerebrospinal fluid pressure is elevated, white blood cells and protein are normal or slightly increased, sugar and chloride are normal,
  2. Serological examination: A single serum complement fixation test titer of more than 1/32 and a red blood cell agglutination inhibition test titer of more than 1/1280 are diagnostically significant. For two serum samples, if the antibody titer in the recovery phase is more than 4 times higher than that in the acute phase, the diagnosis can be confirmed. The lqM antibody capture ELISA method to detect specific IgM antibodies is helpful for the early diagnosis of dengue fever.
  3. Virus isolation: The virus can be isolated by inoculating the serum of patients in the acute phase into the brain of suckling mice or C6/36 cell lines. C6/36 cell lines are commonly used, and the isolation positive rate is 20%-65%.
  4. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction: Detection of acute serum, its sensitivity is higher than virus isolation, can be used for early rapid diagnosis and serotype identification, technical requirements are high,

How can I check if I have dengue?

Dengue the whole blood sample test

  1. Apply pressure on your fingertip using the disposable lancet, test on the edge of your fingertip instead in the center.
  2. Take 25μl whole blood fingertip blood with the matched capillary pipette.
  3. Add 1-2drops (each)(about 10μL~20μL
  4. Add 1~2 drops of buffer solution.

For serum/plasma sample testing

  1. 7-15μL serum/plasma with transfer pipette.
  2. Add 2 drops (about 5o μl)

What are the warning signs of dengue?

Fever

Patients usually develop the disease acutely, with the first symptom being a sudden high fever, which may be accompanied by chills. The body temperature can reach 40°C within 24 hours. It usually lasts for 3 to 7 days. Some patients may have a fever for 3 to 5 days and then the body temperature will drop to normal, but it will rise again after 1 day. This phenomenon is called double peak or saddle fever.
In the early stage of fever, there may be severe headache, eye pain, muscle pain bone and joint pain, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Rash

The rash usually appears 3-6 days into the course of the disease, manifesting as hemorrhagic rash such as hemorrhages, or congestive rash such as erythematous rash, maculopapular rash, and measles-like rash.
The rash first appears on the limbs, then spreads to the trunk and the whole body, generally lasting 3-5 days. There is no desquamation or pigmentation after the rash subsides. The typical rash is pinpoint hemorrhages on the limbs, or erythematous rash that merges into patches, in which small pieces of normal skin can be seen, referred to as “skin islands”.

Bleeding

It usually appears 5 to 8 days after the onset of the disease. About 25% to 50% of cases may experience varying degrees of bleeding in the skin, nasal cavity, gums, digestive tract, abdominal cavity, chest cavity and vagina.

Other

The lymph nodes throughout the body may be slightly enlarged and tender to the touch. Hepatomegaly may occur, but splenomegaly is rare. Jaundice may occur in some cases.

Is a CBC test for dengue?

Blood tests usually include a complete blood count, liver function tests, etc. These tests may help evaluate the symptoms of dengue fever, but cannot directly diagnose dengue fever.
